The Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir — Book Review

Sci-Fi isn’t a genre I typically go out of my way to read, but my boyfriend downloaded (pirated) an audiobook copy of The Project Hail Mary by Andy Weird and told me it was good, so I decided to listen to it.

The story follows a guy who has to save Earth because, unfortunately, an alien organism is consuming the sun’s energy. As a result, the sun is burning out soooo fast which means humanity is facing extinction in an untimely manner.

Project Hail Mary won me for it’s humor. There are a lot of scientific terms and geeky explanations—some of which I have no idea if they’re accurate. But this is Sci-Fi, so maybe that’s lesser of a concern. They were also hard for me to visualize, so I wasn’t as invested in those parts. But the main character’s goofy personality kept things entertaining.

And then he finally meets an alien—a tentacled species also trying to fix the sun because their planet is at risk too. Their dynamic was just so fun and wholesome; it honestly made me smile the whole time.

I also enjoyed the random, completely unimportant facts sprinkled throughout the book. They were included for a reason, but for me, just hearing them was oddly fun.

That said, I found the book a bit slow and dragging at times. There were a lot of overly detailed, geeky descriptions of space and science that I didn’t care about as much as I’d hoped. By the end, I felt like I was just listening to finish it.

But of course, that’s just my opinion. I’m sure Sci-Fi fans would really love this book. I know my boyfriend, who’s into SciFi would absolutely enjoy this one, and he is looking forward to movie adaptation of this book in 2026.
