The House of Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

I’ve just read The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune, and boy, this was the most fun I ever had with a book.

I really loved Howl’s Moving Castle, which I read last year. But when I read this book, I realized I was still looking for more from that book, and this one was able to drive it home.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is quite literally a house for six magical orphan children, and they are looked after by an adult named Arthur. Then Linus, a caseworker, comes to this orphanage to make sure the place is well-managed and suitable for the magical children living there…and so the adventure begins.

Most of the scenes here are filled with hilarious retorts from the six magical children to the adults, Arthur and Linus. I often found myself laughing during their interactions because they were genuinely funny. It’s like watching babies on Instagram Reels say the most random, out-of-this-world things—you just can’t help but laugh at how clever and annoyingly cute they are. They’re very, very adorable children. And if I had to pick a favorite, I’d say Lucy. But I feel like Arthur and Linus would totally tell me off because you’re not supposed to have favorites. That’s just bad parenting, obviously.

I’ve never adored a book so much that I wished I could experience it all over again like I was reading it for the first time—until this one. It’s the first time I’ve ever wanted to erase a book from my memory just so I could read it fresh and relive all the joy it gave me. Just… I don’t know. Chef’s kiss.

As of writing, I am currently on the second book, and you won’t be disappointed to know that this sequel is holding steady. Everything I loved about the first book is alive and well in this one.

I really recommend this to anyone who is feeling low. This book, I guarantee, will make your life really bright and fun.

Have you read this book? If you have, share your thoughts in the comments! If not, let me know if it’s on your list! ❤️
